Scouting Report: Calvin Ashley – 2017 Offensive Tackle

Sometimes it’s just not fair. It’s not fair that some kids are built like offensive tackle Calvin Ashley while others have to scrape for every extra inch to measure up to compete at the highest levels of football.

If there is a scouting dictionary locked away somewhere in a football library, the Auburn commitment’s picture is what would be next to the definition of an offensive tackle. This kid could walk into the NFL combine next week and not look out of place with the the guys who are about to start making a living playing the game. He has some way to go to get to be one of those guys to be ready for a jump to the league, but his genetic gifts should help him get there in a few years.

Scouting Report: Osiris St. Brown – 2017 Wide Receiver

You can read my scouting report on wide receiver Osiris St. Brown over at Irish Sports Daily ($).

He is the brother of current Notre Dame receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, but is smaller than his older sibling. Just like ESB, he does a great job of winning 50/50 balls and is super competitive when the ball is in the air.

He’s not a burner, but has good speed and uses his body well to gain separation. He should be someone who can compete early at the next level.

Scouting Report: Hendon Hooker – 2017 Quarterback

You can find my scouting report on quarterback Hendon Hooker on Irish Sports Daily ($).

He is a good, but not elite, athlete that is a threat with his legs and shows great touch with the deep ball. I wasn’t blown away by his arm on film, but liked what I saw from him in person at the Army Combine back in January.

He does a nice job of escaping the rush, but mostly looks to run first when he does rather than keep his eyes down field. Also a very good basketball player, I think he’ll likely fill out and end up. He has a high ceiling, but may take some time to develop at the next level.

Scouting Report: Avery Davis – 2017 Quarterback

You can find my scouting report on Avery Davis at Irish Sports Daily ($)

He’s an outstanding athlete with solid footwork in the pocket and a terrific feel for the rush. There are others who look the part more, but he is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in this class. He is a scrambler that can gain big chunk yardage with his legs and yet looks to pass first when flushed from the pocket.

Scouting Report: Jamyest Williams – 2017 Cornerback

Sometimes it’s not about the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

All I know is that Jamyest Williams has a lot of dog in him as a football player. This kid can ball against anyone at any size. It’s not just that he is a great athlete that has the top schools in the country after him. It’s the compete level that makes him one of the top recruits in the nation that could excel on either side of the football at the next level.

Scouting Report: Haskell Garrett – 2017 Defensive Tackle

It’s no fluke that Bishop Gorman has emerged as possibly the top high school football program in America over the last couple of seasons. It’s a program with a history of producing talent, but now that talent is even greater than before with studs coming from California and Hawaii to play for the G.

Haskell Garrett is one of those prospects who came from Hawaii and moved to Las Vegas to attend Gorman. It’s been a beneficial move for him as he is already a top prospect and has been able to show he has a bright future as an interior defensive lineman against the top competition Gorman plays every year.

Scouting Report: Antjuan Simmons – 2017 Linebacker

Sometimes you watch a prospects tape and a few plays in, you feel like you’ve seen enough.

That can be a good or bad thing, but with Antjuan Simmons it’s a very good thing. It’s easy to see why so many programs have already offered him and why he is being pursued by college football coaches from around the country. He has wow physical traits that show out in his play on the field and it’s going to be exciting to watch his development during his senior year and beyond.

Scouting Report: Jean Delance – 2016 Offensive Tackle

To a lot of college football fans, Jean Delance is the recruit who de-committed from Oklahoma after the horrible racist incident involving a fraternity. In a couple of years they very well could all know him as one of the top offensive tackles in the nation.

He is a terrific athlete and is someone who is likely going to become an elite player at a school like Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Texas, or Texas A&M.

Scouting Report: N’Keal Harry – 2016 Wide Receiver

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a greater disparity in a player’s ranking than wide receiver N’Keal Harry. Harry is a 3 star and ranked as the 61st best receiver in the nation on 247Sports. He is a 5 star and the 2nd best receiver in the nation by It’s like saying one piece of meat is the quality of a White Castle burger and someone else says it’s filet mignon.

I don’t know if I would rank Harry as a 5 star recruit, but he is certainly a lot closer to the that than a 3 star in my opinion. He is someone who should be an immediate contributor at Arizona State and should develop into on of the top receivers in the Pac-12.
